"I'd recommend this hotel to anyone wanting to explore Yorkshire which is a great area with lots to do."
- Trip Advisor member, Montrose

Whether it's sightseeing the cathedrals and castles, walking the dales and moors or simply enjoying Yorkshire's finest in food and drink, Newton House is ideally situated for exploring the surrounding culture and countryside...

Knaresborough is a medieval market town with a charm all of its own, offering a host of attractions for visitors.

Top of most people's lists is the spectacular view along the River Nidd, which winds through a limestone gorge and passes under the high, arched railway viaduct, built in 1851. A stroll along the riverside lets you take in the sights, do a little gentle boating or treat yourself to an ice cream or a café meal.

On the opposite bank is Mother Shipton's Cave, former home of England's most famous prophetess, and the Petrifying Well where everything from a top hat to a teddy bear gradually turns to stone.

Looking down over viaduct and river, the town's ruined Norman castle complete with dungeon and sally port stands guard with the Courthouse Museum situated in the oldest surviving building.

The castle stands a very short walk away from the town centre where you'll find small galleries, craft shops, traditional and speciality shops and, every Wednesday, an open-air market.

To keep the family entertained, a modern swimming pool stands less than 200 yards from Newton House and, elsewhere in the town, you'll find crazy golf, pitch & putt and tennis.

After a few hours spent shopping or sightseeing, you'll no doubt be looking forward to a drink and something to eat. Knaresborough has no shortage of cafés and there are pubs aplenty in the town and its surrounding villages.

Denise has lived in the area for 12 years and will be only too happy to advise you on places to eat, countryside walks and great days out.

Newton House is ideally situated for guests to explore the very best that Yorkshire has to offer. Harewood House and Gardens The Edwardian spa town of Harrogate is less than 4 miles away and offers excellent shopping and dining in beautiful surroundings. Leeds, now a premier destination for retail therapy and a place that thrives on an ever-changing bar and restaurant scene, is easily reached by car or train.

Historic York is equally accessible and combines the antiquity of its Roman walls and ancient Minster with internationally-famous museums, boat trips on the river and more, all set around a busy, bustling shopping, eating and drinking city centre.

The quieter cathedral charms of Ripon and the imposing castle in Skipton's market town are also well worth a visit. Fountains Abbey Close to Ripon lies Fountains Abbey, a World Heritage Site. Equally impressive, and world-famous in their own right, are Harewood House and Castle Howard.

And with a history all their own, but enjoyable in a very different way, are the nearby racecourses of Wetherby, York, Ripon and Thirsk. If golf is your bag, you will be pleased to know there is an abundance of courses around Knaresborough.

Heading up country from Knaresborough, the North York Moors await. Mile after mile of spectacular countryside - excellent for walking, but rewarding for motorists too - leads to the smugglers' villages and charming seaside resorts of our beautiful coast.

And away to the west the Yorkshire Dales is excellent walking country, giving you an ever-changing landscape of breathtaking views dotted with charming towns and villages and their warm and welcoming pubs.
